Built by young people.
For young people.
Sparks Youth Initiative was born from a simple but powerful question asked during a mental awareness programme for men over 50:
“What would you tell your younger self if you had the chance?”
The answers were honest, emotional, and deeply human. Many spoke about pressure, silence, missed guidance, mental health struggles, confidence, purpose, and the lessons they learned too late. They wished someone had prepared them earlier for life, relationships, resilience, and self-worth.

Out of those conversations came a shared mission — to make sure the next generation does not have to figure everything out alone.
Our platform exists to connect experience with youth, creating a safe place and supportive hub where young people and participants can learn, grow, and truly thrive. Through mentorship, open conversations, personal development, and community support, we aim to build confidence, encourage wellbeing, and inspire positive futures.
We believe wisdom should not stay locked in one generation. By giving back, sharing stories, and guiding young people through real-life challenges, we are building stronger communities rooted in understanding, awareness, opportunity, and connection.
This is more than a youth initiative.
It is a bridge between generations.
A safe space to listen, learn, grow, and lead differently.
Our values
Grounded
We meet young people where they are, not where systems expect them to be.
Honest
We tell the truth about what we can and can't do, and we don't promise miracles.
Long-haul
Twelve months minimum, often years. Real change takes real time.
Our mission
To stand alongside young people in Thurrock and across Essex — offering safe homes, steady mentors and real opportunities — so every young person has the chance to thrive on their own terms.
“A youth’s future shouldn’t depend on the postcode they were born into.”
— Sparks Youth Initiative founding charter, adopted 2026
Our guidelines
Safeguarding first
Every staff member, mentor and volunteer is DBS-checked and trained in trauma-informed practice.
Youth voice leads
No decision about young people is made without young people in the room.
Confidential & non-judgemental
What is shared with us stays with us, unless safety requires otherwise.
Inclusive by design
We welcome every background, faith, identity and ability. Discrimination has no place here.
Our goals
Young people supported each year by 2027.
Across Grays, Tilbury and South Ockendon by 2028.
Of residents in stable housing 12 months after leaving us.
Our commitment
We commit to showing up — consistently, honestly and for the long haul. To listening before we act. To celebrating progress over perfection. And to making sure no young person in Essex feels like they have to face what’s next on their own.
